Academic profile

Ioana Bunescu (PhD in Sociology) is Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Global Political Studies at Malmö University in Sweden. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Her doctoral dissertation defended in 2009 is an inter-disciplinary study of the emergent trans-territorial collective identity of the Roma/Gypsy populations in Europe. In the past few years, Ioana Bunescu lectured and supervised postgraduate and undergraduate theses at Roskilde University and Aalborg University in Denmark. Her current research is a comparative study of the effects of internationalization of education on the dynamics among national and international academic staff at selected universities in Denmark and Sweden. Among her current research interests are: Roma migration from Central Eastern European countries to Western European and Nordic countries; the Nordic welfare state and diversity management; the study of perceptions of threats and the alleged European decline in the context of the Euro crisis; political discourses of the demise of multiculturalism and popular responses; the functions of (ethnic, religious, national etc.) minority and difference-bashing for politics; theoretical developments of citizenship studies and empirically constituted transnational identities under conditions of globalization; multiculturalism, cosmopolitanism, nationalism and xenophobia.
