Academic profile

I am an established Research Fellow at the University of Salford. I have expertise in qualitative research methods, with extensive experience of undertaking research around migration, welfare, social exclusion/inclusion and community cohesion. Over the past five years I have lead 16 externally funded research projects, and been co-investigator on 17 addtional research projects. I have carried out ten studies across the UK focusing on the needs and experiences Central and Eastern European (CEE) migrants, including Roma. I have also been involved in 14 studies focusing on the accommodation and related needs of UK Gypsies and Travellers. I am currently co-investigator on a European Commission funded project looking at the treatment of Roma communities across six EU countries. I am also a member of Europia – The Greater Manchester Forum for European Migrants, UK.

Publications

  • Dwyer, P., Lewis, H., Scullion, L. and Waite, L. (2011): Status matters: forced labour and UK immigration policy, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), UK. The project investigated the links between immigration status and forced labour in the UK, exploring how socio-legal status (i.e. specific rights to residence, work and social welfare) impacts on the risk of forced labour. The project identified Roma one of the groups particualrly susceptible to exploitation.
  • On-going research for various UK local authorities assessing the accommodation and related needs of UK Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople (see CV for list of projects / publications).
