Academic profile

My academic work is predominantly in the area of political theory and political philosophy. From the point of view of these research fields, I explore the theories of civil society and mainly the critical discourse on the inclusiveness of the democratic public sphere. The aim of most of my research is to critically assess the potential and risks related to the notion of public sphere within the debate on deliberative democracy vis-à-vis the process of democratic inclusion of underrepresented, marginalized groups, particularly the Roma (and other cultural, ethnic, or national minorities). I also devote much attention to the issue of gender and the public sphere, approaching the topic from the point of view of feminist political theory as represented for instance by I.M. Young, Anne Phillips, or Nancy Fraser. The latest focus of my research has been on the notion of representation and representativeness in relation to groups within the civil society, namely the Roma civic sector. In line with this, I have been involved in 2 major international projects dealing with relevant issues funded by the 6th and 7th EU Framework Programmes: ‘EuroEthos – Exploring the Scope for a Shared European Pluralistic Ethos: A comparative investigation of religious and secular ethically-derived requests for exemption from the law in an enlarging Europe’ and ‘RESPECT: Towards a „Topography“ of Tolerance and Equal Respect‘
