Academic profile

I am a historian currently working in a project The history of the Finnish Roma, focussing on 19th and 20th centuries. My PhD thesis (European University Institute, 2010) dealt with the rise of the so-called ‘Gypsy’ and ‘tattare’ ‘questions’ in Finland and Sweden – i.e., the way in which modern nation-state building problematized the Roma and Resande (‘Traveller’) minorities in these countries. Besides historical perspectives, I am interested in- and have written about- the contemporary situation of Roma and Traveller groups in Europe, particularly dealing with anti-Roma populism and ethnic violence, as well as with long-term continuities in the Westward movement of Roma and the attempts to block this mobility. My other research interests relate to comparative history of immigration, ethnic relations, citizenship regimes, border control and nation-building.
